NAB AFL Auskick at Star of the Sea
This term sees the first time NAB AFL Auskick has been at the Cleveland Catholic School, Star of the Sea. A little known school in the bayside suburb, Star of the Sea has 72 enrolled students, with an amazing 56 participating in the Auskick program for the first time. After running some clinics at the school in the last few weeks of term 2, the school has warmly welcomed AFL into their gates with Auskick now up and running on Monday afternoons.
Centre Coordinator Derek Berry has been very enthusiastic about coming to such a small school and having an astounding number of children take up the program. “It’s awesome to see so many kids from the school come down and play Auskick each Monday afternoon. There are some really great kids here, and they are really enjoying learning new skills and playing games.” Local Redland Bombers player Marcus Smith is also on hand as an AFL Development Officer for each session and is rapt to see so many local kids getting involved in AFL. “It’s really good to see heaps of kids in our area playing AFL Auskick, and hopefully eventually come down and play junior AFL at our club”
The school has even provided free flavoured ‘slushies’ for all the parents, kids and AFL staff the past few Monday afternoons. This adds to a great community atmosphere at the centre, with plenty of parents getting involved each session and having a kick.
