NAB AFL AUSKICK MAKES GREEN THEIR SECOND TEAM

Thursday June 3, 2010

One of the biggest challenges facing Australian football is the impact of climate change on community football grounds, and on  World Environment Day NAB AFL Auskick halftime participants at this weekend’s Carlton versus Melbourne ‘Green Game’ will make green their second team.

In addition to running through a giant green banner on the ground that reads “Making Green our Second Team”, the NAB AFL Auskick Little League participants will kick goals for our environment by exchanging goal post for recycling bins.

Each NAB AFL Auskick participant on the day will also be given a pack from Cool Australia, which will encourage them to sign up to Enviroweek.  Participants can get involved in the week by taking on an environment challenge and getting sponsored by their friends and family to raise money for their favourite environmental organisation.  Enviroweek will take place from September 12th -18th 2010.

The involvement of NAB AFL Auskick in the Green Game will coincide with the launch of the AFL’s new online training module called Green Clubs for community football clubs and the broader Australian football industry.

Green Clubs aims to educate clubs about ways they can reduce their impact on the environment, while ensuring the sustainability of sporting grounds.  The module includes strategies for saving water, reducing energy use and the amount of waste sent to landfill.

The Green Clubs module is one component of a partnership established last year with the Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.
