It’s a long way from Longreach to the hallowed grounds at the Gabba, 1,176 kilometres or 14 hours drive to be exact.
Longreach NAB AFL Auskickers made the massive trek from their home town in order to play at half-time during the Brisbane Lions clash with the Melbourne Demons on July 1.
The travel was well worth it for the kids who were excited by the opportunity to take centre stage at the Gabba.
"It was so much fun to play on the same ground as the Brisbane Lions," one Auskicker said.
Another child was overwhelmed that he had kicked a goal on the same turf as his football heroes.
Despite a relatively small population, the Longreach NAB AFL Auskick centre had over 50 participants in 2011.
After the success of last year's program, a Longreach NAB AFL Auskick centre will run again next term.
Longreach Auskick coordinator, Tony Sinclair has been a driving force for AFL in the region and is now looking at running Auskick centres in other Western Queensland communities.
Registrations for NAB AFL Auskick for this term are now open. Register online here
